Application Process
Thank you for your interest in becoming a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or Supervisory Candidate (SEC) student. All new applicants must complete the appropriate application for either Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or Supervisory Education. Before submitting your application, there is a couple of important items you may need to obtain, identify or complete to assist you in the process.
Also, you are invited to review the term schedule and tuition in the Education Division Tab.
NOTE: Your CPE or SEC application cannot be acted on until it has been completed to 100%. Once your application has been completed to 100%, a CPEI Supervisor-Educator will contact you to schedule an interview. If your application is approved, you will receive an acceptance letter and an enrollment form.

Clinical Pastoral Education International’s programs are designed to provide a reflective and relational learning environment in which students are expected to increase in self-awareness, be self-directed and explore one’s theological understanding as it applies and is integrated into their abilities to practice competent pastoral care and pastoral supervision.
Completing a course(s) or one of the Certificate Programs does not guarantee employment or certification as a Board-Certified Chaplain or a Supervisor-Educator. Additional requirements are included in the Certification Manual.
Necessary Documents for Application
- References: Identify the names of two references- a faith leader and a personal reference. Obtain their names, phone numbers, and email addresses to be included in the application.
- Potential Clinical Internship Site: Although this may change, you need to begin thinking about a clinical internship site. These include local congregations, healthcare or hospice settings, law enforcement, corrections, etc. and you can view these in the CPEI Internship Manual
- Required Essays: There are four brief essays that will assist us in better understanding you and your plans for completing your training. Therefore, please take time to write these and be prepared to upload them at the time you submit your application.
– Personal History: (2-3 Pages): Provide a 2-3 page reflective autobiography. This is a description of your life story, including your family of origin and current family relationships, significant events, relationships with people that have been significant, and the impact these events and relationships have had on your development.
– Religious/Spiritual Development: (1-2 Pages): Provide a 1-2 page paper describing your religious/spiritual development. Include a description of the development of your religious/spiritual life, including events and relationships that affected your faith and currently inform your belief system.
– Ministry Encounter: (1-2 Pages): Provide a 1-2 page paper describing a ministry encounter. This is an account where you were called to help someone in need. Include the nature of the request, an assessment of the need, actions taken, and a summary. Students having completed a previous course/unit of CPE may include a case study/verbatim.
– Understanding of CPE: (1-2 Pages): Provide a 1-2 page paper answering the following question. What is your understanding of Clinical Pastoral Education, and what do you hope to gain personally and professionally?
- Academic Transcripts: Please obtain your graduate academic transcripts and attach them to the application.

What do you hope to gain personally and professionally from CPE supervisory education? Why do you feel CPE supervisory education is a good fit for you? - Resume/CV: Provide a current resume or CV describing your education, training, and work experience.
